Spotlight: The United States of Menswear

One thing I love to do during my travels as a stylist, creative director, photographer, and content creator, is checking out local menswear boutiques and picking up some new not-so-basic basic pieces for my ever-expanding wardrobe. And after doing it for the past sixteen years, you can imagine I’ve racked up a few faves. From tailored suits and accessories that pop, to utility clothing with style (yes, it exists!), my discoveries come from unconventional boutiques around the United States that are sure to have something for any—and every—guy.

When I feel like my shoe rack needs a new addition or two, STAG Provisions in Austin is one of my favorites—shoes like this legacy Shop Moc Oxford and this high-top 01-JP Hi Sneaker put a contemporary spin on tradition, something I’m really drawn to. But for when I want to go full casual, these mules (with a peace & love twist) from New York’s & Son is a total no-brainer.

When I’m looking for some comfortable, casual menswear, Commonwealth in Washington, D.C. immediately comes to mind—it’s a must for high-quality streetwear that suits any taste. Personally, I love to pair this black hoodie that’s just brimming with D.C. pride, with these colorful Adidas kicks. I also can’t forget about Chicago’s Independence, where I picked up these six-pocket drawstring pants that perfectly mix utility and style. And for those times where I just want to do a simple, classic look, this plain black heavy weight t-shirt from L.A.’s General Quarters has yet to do me wrong. But sometimes, I’m in the mood for something with a little bit of a retro flair. In that case, pretty much anything from M. Dumas & Sons in Charleston will do! (This fun, bright plaid sport shirt is a personal fave of mine.) And, of course, who doesn’t love a nice trucker hat to tie it all together? Especially if it’s this one from The Good Wolf in Las Vegas.

Finally, you gotta have the right accessories to round out your look. And if you’re ever in Seattle, look no further than Prism, where I snagged these gold mustard glass bubble sunglasses and chunky black frames. And when it comes to bags, I gotta rep my home, the Garden State—this spin on the classic boat tote from Kanibal & Co. in New Jersey does exactly that.

I love that my closet doubles as a travel diary of sorts! It just goes to show you that no matter where you are, there’s loads of style to be found—anywhere and everywhere you look.
