A hotbed of enterprising creativity, quirk, invention and individual style, the 24-hour city of Bangkok is one of Wallpaper’s favourite destinations. On recent journeys, we’ve discovered an art gallery located in a converted World War II-era warehouse, shimmering monolith constructions beside the Chao Phraya River and an extraordinary array of innovative, hand-crafted items to buy.

The city’s creative brio is best sampled at its independent stalls, stores and retailers. Explore the markets at Chatuchak, Srinagarindra, Ratchada, Patpong and the Khao San Road. A heady, constantly moving, hard-boiled atmosphere pervades – rattling tuk-tuks sharing road space with purring luxury vehicles, and hyper-modern skyscrapers bearing down on ramshackle backstreets. Enjoy the buzz, then treat yourself to a martini at your ‘hi-so’ Renaissance hotel – there are two in the city, the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel and the Renaissance Pattaya Resort & Spa.
